Children’s Nutrition and Omega 3 Salmon Oil.
Many children are simply not eating as healthy as they should. Perhaps excessive snacking and picky eating habits are holding them back. Mom and Dad may cook very little due to a busy work schedule and depend heavily on take-out or processed foods. Child obesity is a problem, child hood diabetes is growing. ADHD is another notable concern getting more attention due to the controversy over conventional treatments. We all need to eat healthier but with as quickly as children grow they need proper nutrition to ensure they have a great start in life. Eating properly, when young is one easy thing that is proactive in order to avoid or at last mitigate many of the issues that impact many adults in North America.
A key component to a child’s diet should be Essential Fatty Acids (EFA) from Omega 3 salmon oil. EFA’s are the ‘good fats’. These are fats that are absolutely required for us to function optimally. These fatty acids are critical in the formation of cells, the building blocks of our bodies. More specifically, they support critical functions related to the cardiovascular, nervous, immune and reproductive systems. Unfortunately, our bodies cannot produce EFA’s. We must ensure that we consume enough on a daily basis. However, Omega 3 salmon oil is naturally produced by salmon and is extracted from their body tissue and not their liver (as in the case of cod liver oil) There are two groups of EFA’s; Omega 3 and Omega 6. (Please note, Omega 9 is not considered ‘essential’ since our bodies can produce Omega 9). ALA (Alpha Linolenic Acid) is the main Omega 3 fatty acid whereas Linoleic Acid is the primary Omega 6 fatty acid. A healthy person will convert ALA to EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid). Omega 3 salmon oil is a very good source of Omega 3. Where flaxseed oil is high in ALA many Omega 3 salmon oils offer EPA and DHA. A healthy body will convert some ALA to EPA but the success of this conversion depends upon diet and one’s physical state of health. Thus, Omega 3 salmon oil with EPA and or DHA provides some benefit in that it is not dependant upon the ALA conversion process.
